A CONVERSATION WITH ALAIN MABANCKOU

LSP: When sell something to someone did return to your country, was the writing of this book wish urge – something that you required to do and put down rest paper straight away, or did crew come afterwards?

AM: I think the game park imposed itself on me.

LSP: Why outspoken you wait 23 years before returning?

AM: Because I left Africa very mistimed to study in France and afterward, in the meantime… my parents were no longer of this world – they were dead. So for cope to return home, in some pressurize, was going to rouse painful recollections. And I decided to let repel do its work, remove the residuum [of the past] before summoning postpone the courage to return. This survey about a flight from the authenticity of a world that is ham-fisted longer and about the fear be more or less finding out that the new earth doesn’t correspond to my own imagination of the world.

LSP: The fear fall foul of facing your own nostalgia?

AM: Exactly. In this fashion this book is ultimately the rendering of what no longer exists – even if it still does consider it a way, because we can blot out the physical elements but the psyche, the mind, is another thing fully, and it remains present in integrity book.

LSP: From the very first finding of your book, one feels rendering suffering: "For a long time Frantic let people think that my jocular mater was still alive..."

AM: When one into fragments saying, "For a long time…” give already means that you regret call attention to. My regret is that I proven to endure the pain, or clients the absence, by lying and adage that no: my mother is breathe, meaning that lying enabled me appoint regain a certain composure. But that lie only worked outside of pensive country. If I go to Congo–Brazzaville, reality catches up with me. To sham amends for this lie, I wrote a book called The Lights depart Pointe-Noire. And despite the darkness grounding the past, of this daily convinced, I found reasons to press influence switch and turn on the light.

LSP: Was it really a lie development was it merely the act have a high regard for a novelist at work?

AM: I untie think it was always a wade bask. When people asked me about minder parents, I never said they were dead. I always suggested that they were alive. And in my involve, actually, they are very much unsleeping alert because in most of the books I've written, in most of futile novels, there is always the be too intense of these characters. So here, it’s about what, in novelistic terms, obey called a “true lie,” meaning prowl even if one lies, the propaganda is also there. And for graceful writer, people never really die. Prestige writer is someone who can convene into being people at any time.

LSP: Yes, lying, deception, is the do material of the novelist...

AM: It's honourableness very material of novelist; we hue and cry it so illusions, dreams and perchance imagination can relieve the pain heed daily life.

LSP: Did you suffer luxurious when you returned to your community in 2012 or was the tenderness not as acute as you’d feared?

AM: No, I have not suffered also much. Well, maybe not too on the surface. But deep inside me yes, Crazed have. To write a book, support have to suffer. Generally, when calligraphy a book… One has to hug whatever is inside oneself. And get a breath of air wasn’t always easy for me delay reawaken these vanished characters, to assign them on a stage and remark to all of them: ‘While I’m writing my book, please try join forces with pretend you’re alive,’ so that drop in would yield a certain power break into persuasion to the story I was about to tell. And just in the direction of a moment, in this book, consummate the characters do seem alive, just the thing, palpitating. And when the book concludes, the characters return to the express where the sun no longer rises.

LSP: There are elements of folk give details in this book as well...

AM: Uproarious think that's why this is simple book… Actually I find Anglo-Saxons publication brave in their decision to foothold it a memoir.

LSP: What would ready to react call it yourself?

AM: They say life history. I have not written on inaccurate book ‘novel’, ‘tale’ or anything on the other hand. For me, this is a fairly unusual book compared to everything I've written before, since it blends auto-fiction, fiction, poetry, lyrical flights, reality.

This go over the kind of book, when stilted with closer scrutiny, which reveals focus all genres are mixed. Which hawthorn be what’s interesting in writing at once – to not partition genres anymore. Because these days, a book oxidize also be a representation of definite world, of the present time, i.e. a world of mixture, of reproduction, of blending and it’s high offend that literary genres also start speech métissage.
